Whether you need a better way to backup your system or are looking for a simple method for reformatting your discs, Format Factory is the way to go. It can manage many more formats than most of its competitors, and it’s free to boot. Here is the simple process for ripping DVDs using Format Factory:

Start the Format Factory Program

Install and start up Format Factory. Locate the panel labeled ROM Device/DVD/CD/ISO. Then select the option marked DVD in Video File.

Choose Your DVD

This will bring up a window called DVD to Video which gives you several options. First, choose the DVD you want to rip from the drop-down list that is located at the top of the window. Along the left-hand side, you will find a list where you can choose the titles/chapters that you want to copy. Select the format type of the disc by clicking on the drop-down menu under the heading Output Setting. (Your choices here will be MP4, AVI, FLV, MPG, VOB, 3GP, WMV, and SWF.)

Adjust the Quality of the Recording

If you need to adjust the quality of the video, now is the time to do so. Go to the option labeled Quality Setting and click the button. It’s best to go with one of the built-in profiles until you’re familiar with using the software. Try Medium Quality for starters. If you’re savvy enough with video formatting to do so comfortably, you can select the Custom option instead and set it for yourself manually.

Selecting Subtitles for Your Ripped DVD

Now you’ll need to decide if you want to keep the subtitles included in the video (if it has subtitles) or not. Go to the Output Control section and find the drop-down menu under the heading Subtitle Language. Choose the language you prefer or just select None.

Name Your File and Choose Where to Store It

Next you will need to name the file where your video will be stored. Go to the Output File area and enter in the title of your video. Also, select the output folder where you wish to store the file you’re creating. When you are done, hit the button labeled Convert. You will find this option at the top of the window.

Let ‘Er Rip!

Now it’s time to rip your DVD. As soon as you press Convert, Format Factory will take you back to the main window. There, you will find the job you’ve set up in the queue. The last step is to just press the Start button. This will begin the processing.

The time it takes to rip a DVD using File Factory depends on the speed of your computer system as well as how long the DVD is. This process could take several hours.
